Book Club Tuesday: One Part Plant

Almost ten years ago I decided to become a vegetarian. But before I made this decision, let’s go back a bit further to six years before I made this choice to when I left my home province of Alberta (“Cattle Country” to many) to go to grad school. At that time it never occurred to me that vegetarianism was an appropriate dietary choice. People (who I may have referred to as “Hippies”) who were vegetarians were probably from California and mostly likely ate granola and sprouts. I was set in my ways and those ways weren’t so bad. I grew up in a household where we ate “real, whole food” before it was a thing. My mom cooked all our meals from scratch and we got a lot of farm-fresh produce from my grandparents. I inherently knew that Continue reading “Book Club Tuesday: One Part Plant”

Book Club Tuesday: N’Ice Cream

I come from a long line of, as my old neighbour Barbara would put it, “Do-ers.” Why have someone else do something for you when you can do it yourself. For me that something is cooking, my mom and sis it’s sewing, and for my dad it’s home renos. Seriously, he’s handier than a pocket on a shirt! So my dad walks into one of those big box stores that specializes in DIY, tools, and hardware to return a faulty light switch. When my dad asks to return the item at the customer service/returns the lady behind the counter asks why and my dad tells her that it didn’t work.  Continue reading “Book Club Tuesday: N’Ice Cream”

Book Club Tuesday: Cookbook Roundup

Lately I’ve been getting lots of questions from friends and family regarding cookbook suggestions. So I think this week I’ll spend a little time talking about how to optimize your time in the kitchen and which cookbooks you could try based on your level of culinary expertise or interest. I’ll only be referring to the cookbooks and magazines I’ve reviewed so far. TBH I’m running out of cookbooks to review — don’t get me wrong I have loads of cookbooks but none that I’ve cooked enough from where I feel comfortable giving an honest review. Book Club Tuesday: Go Gluten Free Magazine

GGF covers

If you’re reading this or have ever looked at my IG photos you know that I love to cook. In fact, I usually take great delight in preparing and cooking 3 meals a day. Yesterday’s dinner was a different story. The morning was grey and cold. Wind picked up as I pumped gas into the car — the forecast called for a huge blizzard (at least 30 cm! Everything closed or cancelled) so I knew that running on empty wasn’t a safe option (even though there was no snow on the ground and nary a flake to be seen). A quick trip to the grocery store and then it didn’t matter when the onslaught of bad weather happened because we were prepared. Lunch ended up being a breeze — I made Margherita Pizza Dinner Waffles that were insanely quick to make and delicious to eat (Sweet Potato Chronicles — need I say more?). By mid afternoon I was starting to feel chilled and head-achy (probably a cold — every man, woman, and child within a 50 km radius of us has been sick) and I was in no mood to cook. This is where Go Gluten Free Magazine comes in.

Book Club Tuesday: My Darling Lemon Thyme

img_6136

I’ve been waiting awhile to write a post — Instagram is great but it’s not for writers. Since deciding to move my small blog from Tumblr to WordPress I’ve been waiting for a moment to write something that felt important to me. Well, something exciting is happening – Emma Galloway’s My Darling Lemon Thyme cookbook is having its North American release today! I’m not a blogger by any means but I really have so much to say about this book that I thought it best to write a review for it. I think the first thing that struck me about her book was the lack of labels – vegan, gluten-free, vegetarian — just real food. This lack of labelling, I think, helps people to just see the delicious recipes between the pages without getting hung up on what diet you need to have. The recipes are adaptable and forgiving. If you want to make your own tomato sauce there’s a recipe for that but if you use store-bought that’s fine too.
